Proceedings in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned on Monday following uproar triggered by allegations linking Congress with billionaire George Soros.
In the Rajya Sabha, the session was adjourned twice. The first adjournment occured during Zero Hour. Led by party President JP Nadda, BJP members accused Congress leaders of colluding with Soros to destabilise India. They demanded a discussion on the issue.
Congress leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh and Pramod Tiwari raised objections and questioned why the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, allowed BJP members to raise the issue when he had previously rejected similar notices from the opposition. Amidst the chaos, Chairman Dhankhar adjourned the House until 2 pm.
In the Lok Sabha, proceedings were also adjourned until 2 pm as Congress members, joined by allies from the Samajwadi Party, staged protests against the government. The protests were sparked by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s remarks linking Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi to Soros-backed organisations allegedly involved in anti-India activities. The Opposition submitted notices seeking a privilege motion against Dubey. During the protests, Opposition members shouted slogans like, “Modi Sarkar down down", and “Modi Sarkar shame shame, we want justice".
BJP member Sandhya Ray, who was in the chair, attempted to move the tabling of parliamentary papers, but the protests continued. Rahul Gandhi, who was present in the House, participated in the protest. After the papers were laid, Ray informed the House that the notices submitted by Congress leaders were under consideration by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
Both Houses of Parliament are expected to reconvene later, with the controversy surrounding the alleged Soros-Congress links continuing to unfold.
