Commenting on the arrests made today in Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said, "The arrests made today are very important. Especially the arrest of the Station In-charge of Tala Police Station... He was arrested on charges of tampering with the rape and murder case. The people of West Bengal were demanding for a long time that he be arrested... My question is, can a small Station In-charge take such a decision? He must have received instructions from above... Naturally, the people at the top should be arrested... Vineet Goyal should resign right now or else the people of West Bengal will remove the Chief Minister from his post."
In August, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over an investigation into alleged financial irregularities at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, previously handled by a state Special Investigation Team (SIT) following a Calcutta High Court order. The order was prompted by a petition from former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Akhtar Ali.
Amid the long list of allegations against Ghosh, Ali had raised concerns regarding his involvement in trafficking biomedical waste and other misconduct.
On August 28, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) suspended the membership of former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh in light of the ongoing uproar over the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old on-duty junior doctor alongside several financial irregularities at the renowned medical institute during his tenure.
It has been reported that the decision was taken by a disciplinary committee constituted by IMA national president Dr R V Asokan on Wednesday which suo-motu considered the rape and murder case of the postgraduate resident doctor and the subsequent developments.
"They had put up their grievances against you (Ghosh) in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them," the order said.
"The IMA Bengal state branch as well as certain associations' of doctors also have demanded action citing the nature of disrepute brought by you to the profession on the whole," it said.
The order said the disciplinary committee of the IMA has "unanimously decided to suspend you forthwith from the membership of Indian Medical Association."
