'Leave Immediately': MEA Issues Urgent Advisory To Indian Nationals In Syria
In light of the escalating crisis in Syria, the Indian government has issued an advisory urging its citizens to avoid all travel to the country until further notice.
"In view of the current situation in Syria, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all travel to the country until further notice. Indians presently in Syria are urged to stay in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus via the emergency helpline at +963 993385973 (also available on WhatsApp) and email at [email protected] for ongoing updates," the MEA said in a statement.
The ministry further recommended that Indians still in Syria take immediate steps to depart using the earliest available commercial flights. Those unable to leave have been advised to exercise maximum caution, minimise movement and stay alert to safety risks.
In a recent briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on the evolving situation, "We are closely monitoring the escalation in northern Syria. Currently, approximately 90 Indian nationals are in Syria, including 14 individuals working with various United Nations organisations. Our Embassy remains in constant contact with these nationals to ensure their safety and security."
What is Happening in Syria?
Syria’s 13-year civil war has once again intensified as a result of a surprising rebel offensive in Aleppo, which is the country's second-largest city. In a rapid advance over just a few days, rebel forces have taken nearly full control of Aleppo, marking one of their strongest offensives in years. This surge in fighting is part of a broader conflict that has had destabilising consequences well beyond Syria’s borders.
Rebel groups in northwestern Syria have now set their sights on the city of Hama, following their success in Aleppo. Meanwhile, the White Helmets, a volunteer civil defense group in Syria, reported that at least 25 people, including 10 children, were killed in airstrikes by Syrian and Russian forces on Sunday as part of counterattacks.
