Miss Marple with Pancakes and Mexican Potato. Harry Potter with a Hoagie Sandwich and Hot Chocolate. These are some of the combos you can savour at Food for Thought. This little vegetarian cafe in the heart of Mumbai is a part of Kitab Khana, one of Mumbai’s most elegant bookstores.

Food for Thought has a compact, eclectic menu ranging from Maggi and Misal Pav to Turkish Wraps and Arabiatta Pasta. Little wonder then that we ended up circumnavigating the globe in a single meal—with enjoyable, mix-and-match results.

The Potato Wedges (Rs 120) were crisp, and equally sinful were the Quesadillas—not exactly what you’d find on the streets of Guadalajara, but addictively cheesy and crunchy. The salad menu (Rs 160 for all) had many tempting options, including the Fresh Green and Peppered Apple Salad and Vietnamese Rice Noodle Salad, but we chose a lovely Moroccan concoction packed with olives, lettuce, paneer and toasted pita in a delicate tahini dressing.

Food for Thought is best known for its substantial sandwiches (Rs 180), especially the signature Bhel Puri Sandwich, loaded with potatoes, onion and tangy chutney. The Hoagie Sandwich, stuffed with caramelised onions, jalapenos and cheese, works well too. The Grilled Cheese Toastie, meanwhile, is a sure hit with the under-10 crowd.

Apart from the greasy and limp pizza, we were delighted with our meal. The best part came at the end: the golden waffles went down easily with the rich chocolate sauce. The Profiterole pastry may have been a tad soggy, but the Sticky Toffee Pudding provided a fitting Enid Blytonesque finale.
