The Bharatiya Janata Party has accused veteran Congress leader Sonia Gandhi of having ties with Hungarian-American businessman George Soros' foundation. As per the BJP, the foundation has been further linked to supporting stances and movements such as independence for Kashmir.

Calling these links a "serious concern", the ruling party claimed that organisations funded by George Soros have "joined forces" with Congress and the opposition to "tarnish the Modi government".

Opposition Slams BJP's Allegations

Congress and the opposition have dismissed all claims made by the BJP. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram dismissed BJP's allegations as "dark fantasies".

"People have dark, morbid fantasies and they can continue to have them, and there will be no credence given to all these conspiracy theories. We are always for the sovereignty and unity of India. We are patriots, we are nationalists and we are doing nothing that is against the integrity of India," the Congress MP told NDTV.

Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav has also dismissed the allegation and called it "another routine by the BJP."

"It has become a habit of BJP to make false allegations. None of their allegations have turned out to be true till date," said Yadav.

Ahead of the Parliament session in New Delhi, Union Minister and BJP leader Kiren Rijiju stated that the allegations put forth by the BJP are not false.

"I wish to tell the leaders and workers of the Congress that even if their own party leaders are found to be working in tandem with anti-India forces, they should raise their voice against them,” Rijiju said.

Furthermore, the United States has also denied the allegations put forth by the ruling party. A spokesperson from the US Embassy described the claims as "disappointing."

"It's disappointing that the ruling party in India would make these kinds of accusations," the US embassy spokesperson said.

"The US government works with independent organisations on programming that supports professional development and capacity building training for journalists. This programming does not influence the editorial decisions or direction of these organisations," the official added.

What Has BJP Alleged?

In a series of posts on social media platform X, the BJP has claimed that Sonia Gandhi, who is the the co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific, has ties with Hungarian-American businessman George Soros.

As per BJP, the FDL-AP is connected to an organisation funded by the George Soros foundation.

"This association between Sonia Gandhi and an organisation that has backed the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation expresses the influence of foreign entities on India's internal affairs and the political impact of such connections," the BJP stated.

Furthermore, the BJP has also alleged that George Foros is funding a media outlet - Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) - which is working with the opposition to "destabilise India".

The BJP has alleged that OCCRP is responsible for disseminating reports such as allegations against the Adani Group.

"Rahul Gandhi's press conference on Adani was live telecast by George Soros-funded OCCRP, which Gandhi used as a source to criticise Adani. It shows nothing but their strong and dangerous relationship and highlights their attempts to derail the Indian economy. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly acknowledged George Soros as an 'old friend'. It's something truly noteworthy," the BJP said.
