But there are a few designers with extremely motivating journeys that need to be heard and the tales they have to tell translate seamlessly into their work. Fashion is a high-stress industry that demands single-mindedness and women often end up compromising for family reasons. But Kamal Sood wasn’t one of them. She had an established career and a settled family life; but gave it all up at the age of 35 to hustle again and follow her dreams.

Four years into her demanding journey, she crafted her own label ‘Kamal Sood’. She has been bestowed with international recognition for her outstanding work across major fashion platforms. Kamal’s brand stands as an ode to the embodiment of perfect balance of old-world charm with contemporary flair, featuring intricate embroidery handcrafted on the finest fabrics that she sources from various parts of India. Each of her individual pieces are timeless and versatile, seamlessly blending traditional wear with modern elements.

“Since the young age of 6, I watched my mom handmake fabrics on our humble sewing machine. Seeing her design such colourful and intricate outfits for my sister and I, it drew me greatly to art, design, and fashion. And, growing up in India just made me fall deeper in love with the country’s rich art and diversity. Taking inspiration from my mom, as a teenager I began experimenting with designing my Indian outfits! It wasn’t until I decided to make my very own wedding lehenga from scratch, that I realized my lifelong love affair with fashion was just beginning to play out!”

In addition to receiving international recognition, Kamal has been actively involved in styling Bollywood celebrities like Govinda, Neha Kakkar, Rubina Dilaik, Abhinav Shukla, Neeru Bajwa, Akriti Kakkar amongst many others. She has also been closely associated with styling for top contestants of BIG BOSS.

Recently, Kamal is making waves with news of her upcoming exclusive collection launch that captures the essence of Bombay - The City That Famously Never Sleeps.

Inspired by her life story, it holds an extremely special place in her heart. “This is my dream project. Bombay is the perfect amalgamation of everything a city can offer- soul, charm, art, history, cinema and the most importantly, the hope that dreams do come true, just like mine did.”

Kamal is a one-woman army. She doesn’t have a social media agency, a stylist, or a writer. She takes pride in bringing her vision to life, envisaging, and directing everything from start to end for her collection and photoshoots. She now aspires to take India and her designs to the world, making it a global brand and a household name.

She wants the world to know what makes India special, a land known for its rich culture, textile, and craftsmanship.
